Friends Of The Mountain Rescue Team

We are very committed team with emphasis on training and team work, with around 30 callouts a year, the pressure of each team member’s time is considerable.  In recognition of this we would like to invite members of our local community to become ‘Friends’ of the team.  By individuals giving regular donations we as a team can spend more time training and developing.

In return for becoming a Friend of the Team you will receive a regular newsletter, be eligible to enter our challenge walks without paying for registration to the event and receive an invitation to an annual social event where you can meet the team.  You would also be encouraged to take an active interest in the Mountain Rescue Team.

The Team

The team is made up of 40 team members from across the Lothian and Borders area.  Our operational area is roughly the A68 in the East and the A74 in the West, North to the Forth and South to Dumfries and Galloway.  This gives us an area of over 2000 square miles, a large and diverse environment which gives access to a wide range of outdoor leisure activities.

Specialists

TVMRT members all bring to the team a huge range of skills developed over years as mountaineers, walkers and climbers.  All team members must work together and combine personal experience and professional skills, to ensure a high level of service can be delivered to the public.  The team is made up of people from all walks of life and this is its key strength.  Some team members are also Qualified Search and Rescue Dog Handlers (SARDA), Mountain Leaders and Outdoors instructors.

Fundraising

Like all Mountain Rescue Teams across the Country, TVMRT is a voluntary organisation with charitable status, relying on the generosity of many individuals, groups and organisations to help raise the funds that are necessary to run the team.

Despite some funding from the Scottish Executive the team has to work hard to raise funds.  These funds are essential to maintain our rescue base, run the 2 landrover Ambulances and the control vehicle.  All of these are specialist vehicles that have been modified to suit the roles that they play within the team.

The main fundraising event is our annual Mountain Challenge and more recently the September sponsored walk.  In addition we provide specialist First Aid and support for mountain bike races and we look to secure grants and sponsorship wherever possible.

Final Thoughts

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team can only continue to exist by the generosity of donations from the public and from our own fundraising efforts.
